IXA Journal Editor

To help lead this effort, IXA is hiring a part-time Journal Editor for a one-year contract, with the possibility of renewal.  The journal is currently in its initial creation phase, with the inaugural edition planned for Spring 2026.  While we encourage applicants  from our founding institutions (UNL, UT Austin, UC Boulder, ASU, and Georgia State), we welcome applications from all qualified individuals.  

Key Responsibilities

Hone the PerspectiveWork closely with the Editor-in-Chief (EIC) to figure out the voice of the publication based on conversations with IXA member organizations, practitioners, and your own years of experience within Immersive Media.   Help shape the sections and style of the Journal.  Create documentation such as style guides, submission forms, and audience surveys to guide the creation of the journal. 

Curate Writers: Work with the EIC to find compelling research, productions, and topics to write about.  Source talented writers from academia, journalism, and the creative community.  Guide writers through the style guide to ensure their writing meets the Journal’s standards.  Ensure that articles and voicing fit the Journal’s perspective and voice. 

Edit: Guide writers through phases of ideation, drafting, and delivery of final article on time and on budget.  Copyedit and fact-check articles.   Work with the journal design team to lay out articles and visuals. 

Evangelize:  When possible, discuss the journal with colleagues, potential writers, and underwriters.  Generally promote the journal on social and professional channels.   

Project Management: Oversee the editorial calendar and production schedule. Ensure that the journal is on track for publishing during various phases of development.  Manage writers in a way that their contributions are delivered on time and on budget.


Minimum Qualifications

5+ years of experience creating, researching and/or teaching immersive media.  Immersive media, including MR, AR, VR, immersive theater, video games, experiential design, and all types of media that allow audiences a degree of agency in the storytelling. 

Excellent writing voice and editing skills.  You write well for both academic and general audiences and understand how to make writing flow and draw readers in. 

A collaborative work style.  You have successfully collaborated with other writers, academics, and creators on projects.  Listen well and know how to bring out the best in your collaborators. 

Two professional references from people who have directly managed your work.

Highly organized, self-starting, and proven track record
delivering work on time and on budget.

Tech-savvy and a quick learner when it comes to emerging tools and platforms for production, marketing, and project management.


Preferred Skills

Experience developing cross-platform media in which a story can expand over several platforms, such as print, podcast, interactive, VR chat, etc.

Experience starting, nurturing, and sustaining a media project.  Ability to bring in long-term collaborators, partners, and funders.

Strong point of view on immersive media.
  You have a thorough understanding of the industry’s challenges and have a refined ability to critique work and concepts in the interest of furthering the field.

Experience working on social impact media projects with a nuanced understanding of what social impact is and what it isn’t.

Sense of humor and ability to generate fun, engaging writing for the general public.

Experience editing a journal, magazine, or other media publication.  Understand how to work with writers and generate clear, consistent writing that fits with the journal’s voice.

Visual design experience is helpful. You can help the journal look great and easy to scan. 


Timeframe/Compensation

This will be a part-time, contracted position with 5-10 hours/week for a year, with possibility to renew for another year.  Annual compensation is $12,500.
